Method
Mix first 4 ingredients in a bowl until smooth. Place tofu strips in a nonreactive metal or glass bowl then cover with marinade for at least 1 hour, stirring strips occasionally. Sauce: In a heavy saucepan, saute onions and garlic in 1/3 cup oil until onion is translucent. Add remaining ingredients, except lemon juice and tamari. Boil then reduce heat to low and simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add lemon juice and tamari and simmer 10 minutes. Heat grill to medium heat. Lightly brush grill grates with peanut oil and place drained tofu strips on grill with lid closed. Turning once, remove tofu strips from grill when light to dark grill marks show. Place on a serving platter and pour sauce over strips. Bake 10-15 minutes in a 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes.
